More wacky Christian takes on pop culture
These parodies of the Mac vs. PC ads, featuring a schlubby, cool “Christ Follower” in the former role and a straitlaced, dorky “Christian” in the latter, aren’t as awful as they sound on paper. (I’m partial to No. 3, which tackles Christian rock.) Still, I can’t imagine them changing anyone’s mind–they seem more geared toward reinforcing “cool” Christians’ feelings of superiority toward their matching-belt-and-shoes brethren (come to think of it, Mac users–of which I’m one–are an amazingly apt comparison, smugness-wise).

another similarity to the mac ads: i found myself actually liking the “christian/pc” character more than the “christ-follower/mac” guy. in particular, his attempt to be “down with jc, yeah you know me” was kind of endearing. sort of like the dad who embarrasses his kid by using slightly outdated lingo (usually accompanied by hand gestures and slight bending of the knees and/or swaying) when talking in front of his/her friends.
i love the firestorm these kinds of things tend to ignite among certain circles (e.g., the comment section at that site). typically, the discussion devolves into a sort of “you’re a pharisee/no, *you’re* a pharisee” round robin argument.
i must say, it would have helped the christ-follower’s street cred to have clap your hands say yeah or yo la tengo or the 77’s (!) on his playlist.
