On Point rebroadcast

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Hey, maybe you had something better to do the day my interview on NPR’s On Point was broadcast back in June. Well, good news for you: It’ll be rebroadcast on a day nobody has anything going on, which is to say Christmas Day, from 10 to 11 a.m. EST. Chuck the turkey in the oven, liquor up grandpa and set in for a rousing discussion between me, host Tom Ashbrook and Randall Balmer, which included an answer that I gacked so badly I felt the need to blog about it. Mostly, though, it went fine. Ho, ho, ho.

Update: Thanks to Tony for noticing that I originally scheduled the interview to run for 13 hours!

Rumor Mills

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

A couple months ago, I did an interview with Harp magazine about my book. I wasn’t entirely comfortable about it because I proofread Harp for a spell in 2004, and it didn’t go well. The reasons why aren’t important; still, there were some bad feelings lingering on both sides, and I had to admit I was surprised the magazine decided to do a feature on my book.

Life FM interview

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

I did two interviews this week with New Zealand Christian radio stations; Frank Ritchie, the host of one of the shows, has put the audio of our interview up on his blog. All right, mate!

I’m going to be on Interfaith Voices, a public radio show that strives to engage all sorts of viewpoints. The show is on public radio stations around the country; if it’s not near you, it’s available as a podcast.

blog.worship.com

Friday, August 4th, 2006

An extremely fair review of my book from Josh Riley over at blog.worship.com. He rightly takes me to task for not talking to more fans but is mostly positive. Here’s an interesting bit:

You probably won’t find this volume in your local Christian bookstore, and our online sales affiliate does not carry it; nonetheless, the perspectives presented in this book are not without merit, and it is helpful to see the industry through the eyes of one who is outside the faith, whose view of Jesus is largely influenced by those involved one way or another in the modern (or post-modern?) CCM industry.

I haven’t talked about this on the site yet, but while I’m not surprised that my book isn’t carried by most Christian retailers (there is profanity in it, all quoted for what it’s worth), I continue to be baffled that the majority of Christian-media attention to this book has come from blogs and smaller zines. I can’t help but wonder why Christianity Today is the only major Christian publication to do anything on a mass-market book about Christian music. I’d be happy to entertain theories in the comments section.

Mother Jones radio

Monday, July 31st, 2006

My editor at Da Capo says he thinks I’ve written the only book that’s gotten good reviews from both Christianity Today and Mother Jones. I don’t know about that, but after the Mother Jones review ran, I did an interview with Mother Jones radio. And you can listen to it here.

Entertainment Weekly review

For the first time in my life, my dad can’t ask me why I only got an A-.

Our neighbors to the North

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel piece

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

A preview of a Christian rock fest in dairy country, with lots of quotes from yours truly.

Austin American-Statesman review

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

A mostly kind review from the Statesman’s Russell Cobb. I guess I’m feeling a little defensive today, because Cobb says:

Though Rock for Life stops just short of calling for a boycott of anti-Bush bands and can be quite funny (they sell T-shirts that say “abortion is mean” and are especially fond of a design of an embryo playing a guitar), their censorious attitude seems to conflict with Beaujon’s portrait of the modern Christian rock scene. But Beaujon, perhaps overly careful about never making fun of anyone in this subculture, never quite manages to work up a critique of Rock for Life.

I didn’t think it was my job to critique the organization. I profiled it. The critique comes from the reader, depending on how well I handled the profile. If I didn’t give you enough information to make up your own mind, well, that I want to hear about.
